What’s New in FlyQ EFB 4.0 and Advanced FlyQ EFB
Version 4.0 is a massive release that adds a powerful new dimension to your flying: Post-Flight Analysis.   This presentation goes over the 4 major aspects to that: Visual Logbook, Visual Flight Playback and Analysis Graphs, the Floq Network, and several CFI/Student Pilot features.  The presentation also covers other advanced features in FlyQ EFB.
Friday, July 26.  2:30 PM.  Forum Stage 10

Intro to FlyQ EFB and Augmented Reality
FlyQ EFB is the highest-rated major aviation app because it’s so easy to use. Our exclusive “Rule of 2” design philosophy means that all major functions are no more than 2 touches away so you fly the plane, not the iPad.  This presentation covers all the major features so you can download a free trial and get flying immediately!  Also covers the amazing and totally unique Augmented Reality feature which blends real-time video from your iPad or iPhone with computer-generated airport markers to clearly show airports even in the worst weather or the dark of night.

FlyQ EFB 4.0 Released to Apple for Review

Time for the team to get some sleep…. 🙂

The app has been released to Apple for their review.  With some luck, they’ll approve it for public release in a day or two.

Special thanks to our hundreds of beta testers!  This has been the largest, most complex release we’ve made since version 1.0 and the longest beta test cycle ever.  All of you were tremendously helpful!

FlyQ EFB v4.0 and Older Devices

A few months ago, I made a post that mentioned that we were considering dropping support for some very old iPad and iPhone models because they are simply incapable of running FlyQ reliably and with acceptable performance.

We are now planning to target only devices running at least iOS 10. Older devices currently running FlyQ will continue to run and we have no plans to stop supplying data for them but no new versions of FlyQ EFB will run on these older devices.

The devices that will not be supported by FlyQ EFB v4.0 are:

  • iPad 1, iPad 2, iPad 3
  • iPad mini 1
  • iPhone 4S or earlier

To be clear that means that these devices (and more) will support FlyQ EFB 4.0:

  • All iPad Air models
  • All iPad Pro models
  • iPad Mini 2, 3, 4, and 5
  • iPad 4
  • All other full-sized iPad models
  • iPhone 5 and above

Ideally, we would have liked to continue support for the iPad 3.  However, Apple limited the maximum iOS version that it can use to 9.3.5 and there is no clean way to somehow support it but no other iPad model that is limited to 9.3.5.

We hope everyone understands that we’re doing this so our development and testing time can focus on the iPad and iPhone models that the vast majority of our customers use.  Allocating dev and test time to older models is unlikely to produce a product that would run acceptably on the older devices but would negatively impact features and fixes for the newer devices as dev and test resources are finite.

Also, I’d be remiss not to mention that today is Amazon Prime day and they have lots of iPad specials.  For example, just $299 for a new full-sized iPad WiFi-only model with 128 GB of storage ($130 off the list price).  That’s actually a bit newer than the device that I generally use to fly with FlyQ.

July 18, 2019 ChartData Released

New to FlyQ?  Click to watch replays of the recent Intro and Advancedpresentations or watch any of the other 70+ videos we have on YouTube. Or learn more about FlyQ from our new Welcome to FlyQ page.

The next FAA data cycle begins next Thursday, July 18, 2019.  We try to release ChartData the Friday before the new cycle starts.  As that’s today, the new data for the US, Mexico, and Central America is now ready for download. European and Australian data will be ready soon.  However, be sure not to fly with this data until July 18.

If you’re using another data provider, check with them about availability.

Important notes for FlyQ EFB user:  Please do not download this new data if you plan to fly before next Thursday as the app does not currently (hint hint) have any concept of “current” versus “next” data cycle.  However, FlyQ EFB downloads TFRs, fuel prices, and weather automatically so rest assured that this data will always be current even without doing a manual update

Also, read this terrific post from Keith R if you use our ChartData Managerapplication for Windows to update your data.  It explains how to automatically download data and even copy data to a card or USB memory stick without any clicks!  No need to sit and wait for data to download or copy.

  • In FlyQ EFB:  Tap the ChartData Manager icon (the “down arrow” icon), review which states you have selected, then tap Update Now.
  • In FlyQ InSight or FlyQ Pocket: Select the Downloads tab on the bottom of the screen and tap Update Now.
  • In FlyQ Online:  Nothing to download.  Just go to https://flyq.seattleavionics.com and the new data is automatically used when the new cycle begins on Thursday (but not before).
  • For apps and devices that use our Data Manager, run the ChartData Manager (or select Settings from the little icon at the lower right corner of your Windows screen) and tap Update Now.
  • In Voyager, select Update Data from the Tools menu then choose the All Monthly ChartData item.

If you need to renew your subscription, click the appropriate link below:

Note that FlyQ Online (our Web-based flight planner) ChartData is enabled automatically on the day the new cycle begins (next Thursday) so what you see is always the current, legal data.  Unlike data for our apps and devices, we do not release FlyQ Online ChartData ahead of time since there is nothing to download.
