October 10, 2019 ChartData Released

The next FAA data cycle begins next Thursday, October 10, 2019 and the new ChartData is available for download now.  New data is available for the US, Mexico, and Central America. European data will be ready shortly  Be sure not to fly with this data until October 10.

If you’re using another data provider, check with them about availability.

Important notes for FlyQ EFB user:  Please do not download this new data if you plan to fly before Thursday as the app does not currently have any concept of “current” versus “next” data cycle.  However, FlyQ EFB downloads TFRs, fuel prices, and weather automatically so rest assured that this data will always be current even without doing a manual update

Also, read this terrific post from Keith R if you use our ChartData Managerapplication for Windows to update your data.  It explains how to automatically download data and even copy data to a card or USB memory stick without any clicks!  No need to sit and wait for data to download or copy.

  • In FlyQ EFB:  Tap the ChartData Manager icon (the “down arrow” icon), review which states you have selected, then tap Update Now.
  • In FlyQ InSight or FlyQ Pocket: Select the Downloads tab on the bottom of the screen and tap Update Now.
  • In FlyQ Online:  Nothing to download.  Just go to https://flyq.seattleavionics.com and the new data is automatically used when the new cycle begins on Thursday (but not before).
  • For apps and devices that use our Data Manager, run the ChartData Manager (or select Settings from the little icon at the lower right corner of your Windows screen) and tap Update Now.
  • In Voyager, select Update Data from the Tools menu then choose the All Monthly ChartData item.

Note that FlyQ Online (our Web-based flight planner) ChartData is enabled automatically on the day the new cycle begins (Thursday) so what you see is always the current, legal data.  Unlike data for our apps and devices, we do not release FlyQ Online ChartData ahead of time since there is nothing to download.

  1. Whenever you send these emails, you leave me wondering whether I can update the chart data in FlyQ or not. If I’m planning to fly this week BEFORE Thursday, but I know that my charts in FlyQ need to be updated, what am I supposed to do? If I DO update, then you’re telling me I’m flying with invalid charts that won’t be valid until Thursday. But if I DON’T update, then I’m flying with charts that are out of date.

    Why don’t you provide an option in FlyQ for WHICH data to download?


    • Hi David. I’m sorry if there is some confusion. I believe it very specifically says NOT to download the data for FlyQ if you’re going to fly before Thursday — but that things like TFR’s, fuel prices, and such do get updated anyway. If you don’t plan to fly until Thursday, update now. If you do, please wait until your last flight before Thursday. In the near future, we’ll have it set to download ahead of time but not use that data until the appropriate date but it’s not there yet.


      • Steve, my concern is: What am I supposed to do if I know that the chart data I have in FlyQ is out of date (say I haven’t flown in 6 months), but I’m planning to fly this week before Thursday? I’m in an impossible position.

        I realize this isn’t likely to occur for people who fly frequently, but I’m sure other FlyQ users must have the same concern.



      • Hi David. Gotcha. No, I think you’re right that this is a pretty unusual situation. In that case, I’d update the data. If you haven’t flown in 6 months, you must be flying VFR and the VFR charts don’t change much between cycles. It’s mostly an issue for IFR pilots who fly frequently. At any rate, we do plan to address the ability to update before the cycle starts and have it switch over but, even there, it’s unlikely that the app would download data that is about to expire (the current cycle) and also the new cycle so … best to simply fire-up FlyQ once every 28 days to keep the data updated.


      • Steve, I don’t think it’s a great idea to put the burden on the customer to make sure they fire up FlyQ once every 28 days. What I generally LIKE about FlyQ is that whenever I fire it up I can simply tell it to “Update Now,” wait a few minutes for the downloads, and proceed with confidence that I am fully legal and up to date. I don’t want the burden of remembering to run the program every 28 days, or to keep track of the dates of the 28 day cycle. The program should be foolproof.

        Here is the real world situation: I just fired up my FlyQ on my iPad. I last flew on September 24, and I updated FlyQ then. Today, FlyQ shows the areas of the country where I fly as red, meaning “Expired or not downloaded.” I’m planning to fly tomorrow. I _DO_ fly IFR. So am I legal with the data that I downloaded two weeks ago? Apparently not, since my areas show up red on the map. But if I tell it to update, then I won’t be legal since FlyQ will have charts and plates that aren’t valid until Thursday.

        Separate question: if the data updates on a 28 day cycle, and I updated two weeks ago, why are my states showing up red? Is there any way of finding out in the app what are the validity dates of the current database?

        This should be an easy fix. Can’t you simply have the app ask you which database you want to update to?



  2. Hi David. You can tell why the system says “red” for any state by double-tapping on it for more info (or single-tap if a download is in progress). I believe it says that right on the downloads screen. If you recently updated and still see red, it likely means that your TFR or fuel price data is out of date OR you added additional states from the selection map since the last ChartData update. The system should update TFRs and fuel prices automatically a minute or two after the app starts; no need to hit Update Now.

    The FAA release dates for each cycle is available in the Documents part of FlyQ, btw.
