Your favorite aviation movies/YouTube videos/podcasts, etc.

A lot of people are staying more or less at home these days rather than flying.  And with the bans that most states have, no gatherings for shows (like Sun ‘n Fun), fly-ins, pancake breakfasts, etc.  That means we all have more time than we’d like for couch flying.  So … what are you favorite aviation and space related movies, YouTube channels, documentaries, podcasts, etc?

To get things started, a few of mine  — surely I missed dozens of great ones:

Movies:

Top Gun (duh!), Tora Tora Tora, Airplane! (need some humor), Apollo 13, Rocket Boys

TV Shows:

For All Mankind (Apple TV, about what would have happened if the Soviets beat us to the moon)

    • It means you’re an interesting guy 😉 Yes, I watched that one start to finish, too. There is also an Internet channel called Curious Droid that does really interesting, seemingly well-considered science videos

  1. Thanks much. Just watched a great documentary on the WASPs and “Mission of Honor” on Netflix about Polish pilots flying for England in WWII. There’s also a good film on Netflix about female aerobatic competitors but don’t recall the title.

And my thanks to Keith for his diligent support looking into my sometimes-dumb questions about FlyQ. jg

  2. Fly Away Home is a grand aviation movie! For the family to watch together.

Of course if you are breathing and have a beating heart, you have to say Top Gun – cant wait for long awaited sequel this year! I was one of many who lived vicariously through Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. Hmmmm, think I will go watch it again…. and dream Im flying an F22!

  3. Steve, also check out Apollo 11 and First Man. Both are great movies especially in high def on a large screen tv. Stay safe since you are located in the epicenter i.e. Seattle.

    • Absolutely agree to both! I LOVED First Man (full disclosure: I wanted to be an astronaut as a kid so I’ve read a ton about rockets, space missions, and Neil Armstrong, in particular. In fact, I read the book the movie is based on). And thanks — we are staying mostly at home, like everyone else here — just leaving the house for food, one quick run to the office to get something, and bike rides (specifically allowed in WA) for sanity and exercise. I hope you and your loved ones are doing well and being safe, too!
