January 27, 2022 ChartData Released

The next FAA data cycle begins this Thursday, January 27, 2022. The new data can be downloaded now for the US, Mexico, and Central America.  European data will be available shortly. Australian data is unchanged this cycle. Be sure not to fly with this data until January 27.

If you’re using another data provider, check with them about availability.

Important notes for FlyQ EFB user:  Please do not download this new data if you plan to fly before next Thursday as the app does not currently have any concept of “current” versus “next” data cycle.  However, FlyQ EFB downloads TFRs, fuel prices, and weather automatically so rest assured that this data will always be current even without doing a manual update

Also, read this terrific post if you use our ChartData Manager application for Windows to update your data.  It explains how to automatically download data and even copy data to a card or USB memory stick without any clicks!  No need to sit and wait for data to download or copy.

If you haven’t already done so, please be sure to update your ChartData before you fly.

  • In FlyQ EFB:  Tap the ChartData Manager icon (the “down arrow” icon), review which states you have selected, then tap Update Now.
  • In FlyQ InSight or FlyQ Pocket: Select the Downloads tab on the bottom of the screen and tap Update Now.
  • In FlyQ Online:  Nothing to download.  Just go to https://flyq.seattleavionics.com and the new data is automatically used when the new cycle begins next Thursday (but not before).
  • For apps and devices that use our Data Manager, run the ChartData Manager (or select Settings from the little icon at the lower right corner of your Windows screen) and tap Update Now.

If you need to renew your subscription, click the appropriate link below:

Note that FlyQ Online (our Web-based flight planner) ChartData is enabled automatically on the day the new cycle begins (this Thursday) so what you see is always the current, legal data.  Unlike data for our apps and devices, we do not release FlyQ Online ChartData ahead of time since there is nothing to download.

iOS / iPad OS 15.2 Approved for FlyQ EFB 6.0.2

Seattle Avionics has approved the use of Apple iOS / iPad OS version 15.2 with FlyQ EFB version 6.0.2 and the current release of FlyQ InSight (4.0.2). Using earlier FlyQ EFB releases with iOS 15 is not recommended due to minor display issues and inability to connect with Avidyne panels.

How to find the version number for FlyQ EFB

  1. Open FlyQ EFB app
  2. Go to the Settings screen (gear icon)
  3. The version number is at the top right. Example: v6.0.2 (as of this writing, 6.0.2 is the current version of FlyQ EFB)

How to find the version number for iOS or iPad iOS

  1. Open the Settings app
  2. Go to General
  3. Go to About
  4. The iOS version number is under Software Version. Example: 15.1.1

How to update a Seattle Avionics app

  1. Open the App Store app
  2. Tap the Account icon (your image) at the top right of the page.
  3. Scroll down the Account page and look for the icon associated with the app you want to update. Tap Update.
  4. Note: You can enable your iPad or iPhone to automatically update all your apps. We recommend this feature. To do this:
    1. Open the Settings app.
    2. Select App Store on the left side of the screen.
    3. In the Automatic Updates section, turn App Updates on (green).

How to update iOS or iPad iOS

  1. Open the Settings app
  2. Go to General
  3. Go to Software Update
  4. Tap on Download and Install

*Please note that beta (aka “test”) versions of iOS and iPad OS are not finished, have not been fully tested, and contains bugs. Seattle Avionics does not support beta versions of these for use with any of its apps.

Slingshot wireless data transfer now available for Dynon SkyView

With the release of SkyView system software release 16.2.4, Slingshot can now be used to very quickly load SkyView with ChartData via FlyQ EFB. Play the new video to see how it work. You can also watch an earlier video that explains the rationale and benefits (time savings) to using Slingshot.

Quick Summary

1. Download the data as you normally would to your iPad or iPhone running FlyQ EFB.
2. Bring your iPad or iPhone into the plane.
3. Press a few buttons on SkyView and transfer the data to your panel. No ChartData Manager, no USB sticks, no downloading the same data twice.

What You Need

  1. SkyView with software version 16.2.4 or later. Details.
  2. FlyQ EFB (any recent version). If you don’t already have FlyQ, download a free 30 day trial from the Apple App Store or learn more from our website.
  3. A current SkyView ChartData subscription and a current FlyQ EFB subscription are both required and must use the same email address. If your FlyQ and Dynon accounts use different email addresses, please email support@seattleavionics.com for assistance in combining them. Not sure if you have a current account for both systems? Click to https://seattleavionics.com/myAccount/

Note: All SkyView subscriptions include both VFR and IFR data while FlyQ is offered in both VFR-only and VFR + IFR subscription levels. If you have a VFR-only FlyQ subscription, FlyQ will only have VFR ChartData loaded so cannot transfer IFR ChartData (plates and IFR Low/High charts) to SkyView.

Note: The current version of the ChartData Manager (5.x) implies that a FlyQ account also provides free access to Dynon.  This is not the case.  The next version of the ChartData Manager (6.6.0.2) fixes this bug and provides the correct information for each system.  You can view the correct status for each subscription by visiting https://seattleavionics.com/myAccount/  and download the new ChartData Manager from https://chartdata.seattleavionics.com/Apps/DataManagerSetup6602b.exe
  1. SkyView Wi-Fi Adapter.
  2. A USB Flash Drive with at least 16 GB capacity. Dynon advises using a “name-brand” USB stick. Note that SkyView requires the drive to be formatted with the “FAT32” file system. Drives larger than 32 GB are generally formatted with a different file system so we advise using a 32 GB flash drive rather than a 64 GB or larger drive.

Using Slingshot

  1. Open FlyQ EFB
  2. Slingshot is disabled by default in FlyQ. Enable it by going to the Settings screen (“Gear” icon at the top of the screen) and turning on (that is, make the switch blue) the Allow Slingshot access entry shown towards the bottom of the page. You only need to do this once.
  3. Download the ChartData you want in FlyQ by tapping the “Down Arrow” button at the top of page. Tap to select the states you want then tap Update Now. For more information, see the Pilot’s Guide (page 27) or watch this short video.
  4. Bring your iPad or iPhone into the plane.
  5. Ensure that the SkyView Wi-Fi Adapter and a USB Flash Drive are connected to SkyView. You’ll need to do this for each SkyView unit independently if you have more than one.
  6. Power-up SkyView
  7. Connect your iPad or iPhone to the Wi-Fi network that SkyView creates. You’ll need to know the name of the network and the password that SkyView is using. If you’re not sure about these, press and hold Buttons 7 and 8 (the two at the far right) to get to the SkyView Setup menu. Select System Setup then Wi-Fi Setup.
  8. Press and hold Buttons 7 and 8 on SkyView to enter the Setup menu.
  9. Select System Software then Wi-Fi ChartData Download.
  10. Select the ChartData elements you want to use: Plates, Airport Diagrams (Seattle Avionics Airport Diagrams), VFR Sectional Charts, IFR Low Altitude Charts, or IFR High Altitude Charts. Note that you’ll only see options for ChartData elements that you loaded onto FlyQ EFB (for example, if you didn’t download IFR High Altitude charts to FlyQ, you won’t see that option listed here) and remember that you need a VFR + IFR FlyQ EFB subscription if you want IFR charts as the FlyQ VFR subscription level only includes VFR Sectionals, geo-referenced FAA Airport Diagrams, and geo-referenced Seattle Avionics Airport Diagrams. The VFR + IFR level adds geo-referenced approach plates, SIDs/STARs, etc. plus IFR Low and High Altitude Charts.
  11. Select the areas (generally states) you need. Note that deselecting items currently selected (checked) will remove the deselected data from the USB stick after the download (it does not remove data from FlyQ EFB). FlyQ EFB works a bit differently in that deselected areas remain on the iPad or iPhone but are not updated again until they are re-selected.
  12. Push Download to copy the selected ChartData elements from FlyQ to the USB Flash Drive for SkyView’s use.
  13. When the process completes, press Exit to leave the Setup Menu.
  14. Note that the digital navigational database provided by Dynon, Jeppesen, or PocketFMS is not downloaded by FlyQ EFB so not transferred by Slingshot; you’ll still need to copy these files to the USB Flash Drive as you do now.
